An Insight

Congratulations to our Fellow Rostislav-Paul Wilhelm on successfully completing his doctoral thesis

We are delighted to congratulate our NHR Graduate School Fellow, Rostislav-Paul Wilhem, on his incredible accomplishment of completing his doctoral thesis with the highest distinction, summa cum laude, on the topic "Structure-preserving numerical methods for the Vlasov equation without a phase-space mesh."

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Manuel Torrilhon and Prof. Dr. Eric Sonnendrücker at the NHR Center of the RWTH Aachen University.
The NHR-Association provided financial support in the form of a monthly scholarship, opportunities for scientific training and further education as well as access to high-performance computers.

Rostislav-Paul Wilhelm’s research focused on the fundamental challenges in the numerical solution of the kinetic Vlasov equation for plasmas. He developed a novel approach to overcoming these challenges, showing that the system dynamics can be reconstructed from stored electromagnetic potentials using the Lagrange and Hamilton structure of the Vlasov equation. This results in reduced memory requirements and eliminates a numerical discretization error. Rostislav-Paul Wilhelm's innovative approach to numerical solution of the kinetic Vlasov equation has yielded novel findings that hold immense potential for future advancements in the scientific community.

Further information on his research as well as the respective code base can be found here
We wish Rostislav-Paul Wilhelm continued success in his professional scientific career.

Summer School 2024 | Dresden | 10.06.24 - 14.06.24

During the NHR Summer School at ZIH | NHR@TUD, our NHR Graduate School Fellows experienced a week with exciting topics and many opportunities to exchange ideas. There were many new topics to discover: IO and parallel programming, quantum computing and machine learning, as well as workshops on career planning, networking, self-presentation and anti-bias. The get-together on the Elbe meadows and the evening boat trip on the Elbe were excellent opportunities to exchange ideas and get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere.

The winners of the hackathon: Keshvi Tuteja, Marvin Kaster, Raviraj Mandalia und Wenling Ren

Our newly elected speakers of the NHR Graduate School:

  • 1st Cohort: Aasish Sharma, Raviraj Mandalia, Robert Rabben
  • 2nd Cohort: Lennart van Hirtum, Markus Vieht
  • 3rd Cohort: Jorge Antonio Amador Balderas, Giovanna Tosato, Keshvi Tuteja

We look forward to the next Summer School in 2025!

Summer School 2023 | Paderborn | 12.06.23 - 16.06.23

An interesting and intensive program week has come to an end. Our fellows traveled from all NHR centers across Germany and were welcomed in Paderborn by Prof. Christian Plessl, the director of the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing. The focus of the program week was on various HPC workshops, including e.g. "Julia for High-Performance Computing", “MPI Correctness Checking” and training on” Parallel Neural Networks”. On the last day, our fellows participated in soft skills seminars on "self-presentation" and "anti-bias & intercultural communication". In addition, all participants had the opportunity to present their projects and to get to know and network with each other during various activities. We are already looking forward to the next NHR Summer School!

We would like to thank our trainers of the NHR Summer School 2023: Dr. Xin Wu (PC2), Dr. Carsten Bauer (PC2), Joachim Jenke (RWTH), Alexander Hück (TUDa), Simon Schwitanski (RWTH), Adrian Schmitz (RWTH), Dr. Charlotte Debus (KIT), Dr. Marie Weiel (KIT), David Li (KIT).

Summer School 2022 | Berlin | 10.06.22 - 14.06.22

We are excited to announce the inaugural cohort of NHR Graduate School fellows!
From June 13-17, 2022, nine fellows from eight different NHR centers traveled to the Konrad Zuse Institute in Berlin for an exciting week of interesting topics and HPC training. At the Welcome Event, Prof. Christof Schütte, Director of the Zuse Institute in Berlin, welcomed the NHR Graduate School fellows. Over the next few days, the fellows participated in training sessions on the following topics:

  • "Node-level computer architecture and performance engineering"
  • "Introduction to Continuous Integration for Research Software"
  • "Introduction to the methodology of combining molecular simulation and AI".

There were also plenty of chances to network with experts from other NHR centers that organized the NHR Summer School 2022: NHR@ZIB, NHR@TUDa, and NHR@FAU. In addition, all fellows get to know each other better during a tour of Harnack House and a boat trip on the Spree.

We wish all fellows a great start and a warm welcome to the NHR Graduate School!
